Our take
Guesthouse Dyngja has just six rooms at Hafnarbraut 1 in Höfn, each with a private bathroom and its own kitchen equipment, so you can cook langoustine bought in town without queuing for a shared stove. I would book it as the night after Jökulsárlón, which is about 80 km west, roughly an hour on Route 1, with Vestrahorn and Stokksnes some 15 km east for the next morning. The Huldusteinn stone museum is a couple of minutes on foot. The catch is timing: there is no front desk, check-in runs from 16:00 to 21:00 and checkout is at 10:00, so it does not suit a late arrival after a long glacier day or a slow morning. It holds 9.1 across 815 reviews in our data.
Why we love it
- Private kitchens in every room
- Charming garden and terrace for relaxation
- Family-friendly atmosphere
- Easy access to hiking trails
Why guests love itDyngja is a small, self-run guesthouse rather than a hotel, and its six rooms are its whole offer: private bathrooms, a fridge and microwave in each, Wi-Fi, a garden and a terrace for long summer evenings. Families who book the larger rooms get a degree of independence that is rare on the Höfn stretch, where many guesthouses share bathrooms and a single kitchen. It sits within walking distance of the harbour restaurants, the stone museum and the Hornafjörður art museum, and walking trails along the shore start nearby. The trade-offs come from its size and model: no reception, a fixed evening check-in window and an early checkout. Reviews are consistently positive about cleanliness and the hosts' instructions; the hosts list English, Polish and Russian among their languages.
