Reykjavík hotels with a spa, and the baths nearby
Only three of the nine Reykjavík stays on this page have warm water of their own: Hotel Kríunes on Lake Elliðavatn has a sauna and a hot tub, ICELAND SJF Villa in Kópavogur has a hot tub and two saunas, and a three-bedroom house near Nauthólsvík has a private hot tub. The other six have no spa, sauna or hot tub, and I would not book them for one. That is less of a problem than it sounds, because Reykjavík's real spa is public: Sky Lagoon on the Kársnes peninsula, and a ring of geothermal pools with hot tubs and steam rooms, Laugardalslaug the largest. The right base depends on which of those waters you plan to use.
Reykjavík is a small capital heated by geothermal water, and bathing is part of daily life rather than a luxury. Neighbours meet in the hot tubs of their local pool, and the city's most famous spa experience happens outdoors in Kópavogur. That shapes where to stay: near the water you want to use, rather than in a hotel that advertises a spa it barely has.
Where to stay
Hotel spa or Reykjavík's public baths?
In Reykjavík the spa is the city's geothermal water, not the hotel basement: pick a stay near Sky Lagoon, Laugardalslaug or Sundhöll, or one of the three with a hot tub of its own.
Sky Lagoon is the closest thing to a destination spa in the capital area. It sits at the tip of the Kársnes peninsula in Kópavogur, faces the sea across the bay from Nauthólsvík, and is built around a seven-step ritual that includes a cold plunge, a sauna and a steam room. The infinity edge runs some 70 m along the water. Children under 12 are not admitted, so it suits couples better than families. A bike ride from Nauthólsvík takes under 10 minutes, on foot around 40. Of the stays on this page, the villa in Kópavogur also has saunas of its own, an outdoor one included.
For everyday bathing, Icelanders use the municipal pools. Laugardalslaug, in the Laugardalur valley, is Reykjavík's largest, with a 50 m outdoor pool and a full set of hot tubs and steam rooms. Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, nearer the centre, has a 25 m outdoor pool and a 25 m indoor one, with a sauna, steam bath and hot tubs. Vesturbæjarlaug is the small neighbourhood pool within walking distance of the centre. Expect to shower without a swimsuit before entering: it is the rule in every Icelandic pool and at every pool in this city.
Two quieter options are worth knowing. Sundlaug Seltjarnarness, just west of the city, is the capital area's only salt-water pool and has three hot tubs. Nauthólsvík is a geothermal beach on the southern shore, where heated water lets you swim in the sea and sit on sand in a city at 64 degrees north. The house near Nauthólsvík on this page, with its own hot tub, is the stay that pairs best with the beach and with the coastal path to Sky Lagoon. Hvammsvík, about 45 minutes away by car, is the option for bathing in a natural setting.
Of the hotels, Hotel Kríunes is the one I would pick for warmth on site. It overlooks Lake Elliðavatn on the edge of the city, has a sauna and a hot tub, and rents boats, kayaks and bicycles, with 1,184 reviews at 9.0. ICELAND SJF Villa in Kópavogur, rated 9.9, has a hot tub, a sauna and an outdoor sauna for a group, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Casa Dísa sits in Laugardalur, the same valley as Laugardalslaug, but has no spa facilities of its own. The 201 Hotel has a fitness room and is close to a public geothermal pool.
A traveler's takeI would not pay for a Reykjavík hotel because it says spa. For a couple, I would book Hotel Kríunes for its sauna and hot tub by the lake, then spend an evening at Sky Lagoon. For a group or a family, ICELAND SJF Villa, with its hot tub and saunas, or the house near Nauthólsvík. If you stay in the centre, at Hotel Eyja or Tower Suites, use Sundhöll Reykjavíkur or Vesturbæjarlaug like the locals do: none of the central stays here has a spa.

Local tips
- 1Do not choose Hotel Eyja, Tower Suites, Nest Apartments or Reykjavík Central Apartments for a spa: none of them has a sauna, hot tub or spa.
- 2Book Sky Lagoon only for adults and older children: under-12s are not admitted, so families should plan a municipal pool instead.
- 3Shower without a swimsuit before entering any Icelandic pool; it is the rule at Laugardalslaug, Sundhöll and Vesturbæjarlaug alike, and at every other municipal pool.
- 4Try Sundlaug Seltjarnarness for something different: it is the capital area's only salt-water pool, with three hot tubs and a water slide.
- 5Combine Nauthólsvík and Sky Lagoon by bike: the coastal ride between them takes under 10 minutes, or about 40 minutes on foot.
- 6Pick Hotel Kríunes if you want a sauna and hot tub without leaving the hotel, and add a kayak on Lake Elliðavatn in summer.
