The Old Post Office Guesthouse
About this stay
Grundarfjörður sits halfway along the north coast of Snæfellsnes, between Stykkishólmur and Ólafsvík, with Kirkjufell rising at the western edge of town. The Old Post Office stands on Grundargata, the main street, about 200 m from the centre, which is the practical argument for it: you can walk to dinner, to the grocery store, to the harbour and to the town pool after a day in the car. The twelve rooms are spread over three floors as singles, doubles and triples, each with its own shower room, a flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi, and some look out towards Kirkjufell. Guests share a fitted kitchen and a terrace and balcony with views over the fjord and the mountains. Parking is free and check-in starts at 15:00. Kirkjufellsfoss is about 3 km west on road 54, and Snæfellsjökull National Park about 50 km away.

Our take
The Old Post Office stands at Grundargata 50, on the main street of Grundarfjörður, and each of its twelve rooms has its own shower room. I would book it as a two-night base for the north side of the peninsula: Kirkjufellsfoss is about 3 km west on road 54, a few minutes by car, so you can be there at first light and back for breakfast. The shared kitchen matters here, because the town is small and dinner choices are few. I would not book it for staff on hand, a hot tub on site or a single rushed night: it is a self-catering guesthouse, and the peninsula needs a full day on each side.
Why we love it
- Walking distance to the grocery store, restaurants, harbour and pool
- A private shower room in every one of the twelve rooms
- Kirkjufellsfoss a few minutes away for first light
Why guests love itGrundarfjörður is the town I would choose for the north coast of Snæfellsnes, and this guesthouse is in its middle, which is what makes it work. You can walk to the grocery store, the restaurants, the harbour and the sports centre, whose pool, wading pool and two hot tubs are open all year. A triple fits a parent with two children or a couple with one; a family of four needs two rooms, and every room has its own shower, so mornings do not turn into a queue. The shared kitchen lets you cook simple dinners in a town with few places to eat. What it does not offer is service: it is a guesthouse without a restaurant, and there is no play area or hot tub on site. Families with small children who want a garden on the doorstep will be better off at a farm stay elsewhere on the peninsula.
