Stays in Gardur

Garður is a small village at the north-western tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 12 km from Keflavík airport, and it is where I would sleep on a first or last night when the flight is early or late and Reykjavík is a 45-minute detour. The landmark is Garðskagi, at the end of the village, with two lighthouses: the old one from 1897, which erosion pushed too close to the sea, and its 1944 replacement, around 28 m tall, built further inland. The point faces open sea with no town lights behind it, which gives a fair chance at the northern lights on a clear winter night, never a promise. We list five stays here. Lighthouse-Inn is the best known, scored 9.0 out of 10 over 3,017 guest reviews, with sea views and a full English or Irish breakfast. Garður Apartments (9.1, 842 reviews) has family rooms and a full kitchen, and Bay View Apartments (9.9, 175 reviews) adds a hot tub to its kitchens and sea views. Luk House, three bedrooms, suits a group, while Hunters little house is a one-bedroom for couples, the weakest scored at 7.7. Garður is not a base for sightseeing beyond Reykjanes: the Golden Circle and the South Coast start on the far side of the capital. Before driving south on the peninsula, check SafeTravel.is and umferdin.is, since eruptions near Grindavík have closed roads there at short notice.

Each apartment has a full kitchen, and there is a hot tub for the evening. Guests rate it 9.9. Our editorial view: book it for the first or last night, cook in, soak at sunset, and walk to the lighthouses along the shore.
