Where to Stay in Flúðir for Waterfall Trips
If you searched for a Flúðir waterfall, here is the honest answer first: the village has no headline falls of its own. The Litla-Laxá runs through it quietly on its way to the Hvítá. What Flúðir does have is position. Gullfoss is 22 to 46 km from the 18 stays we list here, Faxi on the Tungufljót is a short detour off Route 35, and Hjálparfoss, where the Fossá meets the Þjórsá, is about 30 km away on Route 32. Add the Secret Lagoon on the edge of the village, warm at 38 to 40°C all year, and you get a base where a morning at the falls ends in hot water. These stays average 9.0 out of 10 across 4,711 guest reviews, and 11 of the 18 are tagged for a private or shared hot tub. I would pick Flúðir over Selfoss for a waterfall trip in winter or summer, but not if you want to walk to a falls from your door.
Flúðir is a greenhouse village in the Hrunamannahreppur farmland, warmed by its own hot springs and a much quieter place to sleep than Selfoss or the Geysir strip. It has a mushroom farm bistro, a handful of guesthouses and many self-catering cabins scattered among farms, which is why a car is not optional here.
Where to stay
Which falls fit a Flúðir base, and how
Flúðir works for waterfall travellers because it sits between three very different falls rather than next to one. Gullfoss is the big two-tier drop on the Hvítá, Faxi is a wide, low step on the Tungufljót with a salmon ladder, and Hjálparfoss is a quiet pair of falls in Þjórsárdalur that most Golden Circle coaches never reach. From the village you can do one each day, or two in a loop, and still be back for an evening soak.
Gullfoss drops a total of about 32 m in two tiers into the Hvítá canyon, and it has been a protected site since 1979, managed by the Environment Agency of Iceland. From Flúðir the drive is short enough to be there at first light, before the day tours from Reykjavík arrive. Secret Cabin Hvítárdalur is the closest of our listed stays at 22 km, with Geysir 18 km away. In icy winters the lower walking path to the falls has been gated off by police, so plan on the upper viewpoint from November.
Faxi, also called Vatnsleysufoss, is the falls most Golden Circle drivers pass without stopping. It is only about 7 m high but 80 to 90 m wide across the Tungufljót, roughly 11 to 12 km from Geysir off Route 35. A salmon ladder runs up the left bank as you face it, and July and August give the best chance of seeing fish jump. It takes 20 to 40 minutes, parking is charged, and it slots neatly into the return leg from Geysir towards Reykholt and Flúðir. The Tungufljót is also an angling river, for brown sea trout as well as salmon, so expect anglers on the banks in season.
Hjálparfoss is the reason I would give Flúðir an extra night. It sits about 30 km away at the end of Route 32, a gravel road, where the Fossá and Þjórsá rivers fall side by side from a lava field laid down by Hekla. A visit takes 15 to 30 minutes, and you are close to Þjórsárdalur and the reconstructed Commonwealth Farm. Hoofprints Farm stay, 35 km from Gullfoss, and Guesthouse Dalbaer, 37 km, are farm-side stays that suit this quieter day. The Þjórsá is Iceland's longest river, and its water runs on to a hydroelectric station just downstream of the falls.
The village itself decides your evenings. The Secret Lagoon was built in 1891 and is Iceland's oldest swimming pool; three hot springs, including Litli Geysir, which spouts every few minutes, feed it at 38 to 40°C. The Hill Guesthouse is 1 km away, and Garður Stay Inn includes lagoon entry with the room. Its bistro serves snacks only, no warm meals, so book dinner at Flúðasveppir, the only mushroom farm in Iceland, or cook in one of the six cabins we list. The water flows straight through from the springs and is fully replaced in about 24 hours.
A traveler's takeI would base myself in Flúðir for two nights rather than one. The first day goes to Gullfoss early, Geysir, then Faxi on the way back; the second to Hjálparfoss and Þjórsárdalur, with the Secret Lagoon after each. For the closest start to Gullfoss I would book Secret Cabin Hvítárdalur. If I wanted the lagoon included and a 9.5 score from almost 600 guests, I would take Garður Stay Inn instead. I would skip Flúðir only if a waterfall outside the window is the whole point of the trip.

Local tips
- 1Drive to Gullfoss early: from Flúðir you are 22 to 46 km away, against roughly 120 km from Reykjavík, so you can be at the upper viewpoint before the day tours.
- 2In winter, expect the lower path at Gullfoss to be closed by a gate when it ices over; the upper viewpoint stays open and gives the classic two-tier view.
- 3Time Faxi for July or August if you want to see salmon on the ladder; the rest of the year it is a 20-minute stop for the width of the falls alone.
- 4Route 32 to Hjálparfoss is gravel near the end; check umferdin.is for its condition before setting off in a small rental car outside summer.
- 5Book the Secret Lagoon ahead even in the shoulder season: the lagoon says entry cannot be guaranteed without a booking, and it closes at 19:00 from October to May.
- 6Stock up at the Bónus or Krónan in Selfoss on the way in: the lagoon bistro serves no warm meals, and several of our listed cabins are only reachable by car on farm roads.
- 7For Brúarfoss, use the official Hlauptunga car park, about 200 m from the viewpoint, and never park at the Brekkuskógur summer-house road, which is private.
