Coastal stays in Akranes, Iceland: beach or sea view
For a coastal retreat within an hour of Reykjavík, I would sleep in Akranes and pick a stay that is actually on the water: Teigur Guesthouse or Panorama Glass Lodge WEST, both with direct beachfront access. The town sits on a peninsula between Faxaflói bay and the mouth of Hvalfjörður, about 49 km from central Reykjavík, and the drive through the Hvalfjörður tunnel takes 45 to 50 minutes. Seven of the twelve stays I list in Akranes have a coastal setting, but they are not equal. Two are on the beach, two are a walk from Langisandur, two sit further out, one facing the sea and the other open countryside, and one adults-only lodge sells the view and its own spa. Below I say which is which, and which high scores rest on only a handful of reviews.
Akranes is a fishing town that turned its sea wall into a place to swim. People from Reykjavík come for Langisandur, a soak in Guðlaug after a dip in the Atlantic, the climb up the lighthouse at Breiðin and the walk up Akrafjall behind the town. On a clear day Snæfellsjökull shows across the bay from the Kalmansvík shore. It is quiet in the evening and works best as a first or last night on the way to or from Snæfellsnes.
Which Akranes stay is really on the shore?
Akranes is a working town of about 8,600 people, not a resort, so the coast is the reason to stay over: Langisandur, a Blue Flag beach on the south-east shore, the Guðlaug geothermal pool built into the sea wall, and the two lighthouses at Breiðin. The question is how close to that shore each stay really puts you.
Teigur Guesthouse has the strongest claim to the shore: direct beachfront access, a sun terrace, a garden, family rooms facing that garden, a shared kitchen and a lounge. Bicycles are free to use, which matters more than it sounds, because the beach, the harbour and the lighthouses at Breiðin are spread around the tip of the peninsula and are quicker by bike than on foot. It scores 9.7 across 424 reviews, the most convincing record of the seven. The trade-off is the shared kitchen: if you want to cook alone at any hour, look at The Owl apartment or the Móar guesthouse instead.
Panorama Glass Lodge WEST also has direct beachfront access, with balconies, kitchenettes, a sauna, a hot tub and a pool facing the sea. It answers the romantic coastal retreat search better than anything else in town. Brekka Retreat and Spa Iceland is the other couples' option: adults-only, ground-floor units with their own entrance and soundproofing, a sauna, a hot tub and sea and mountain views, but with no beach access. Both are new to guests. The lodge scores 9.8 from 8 reviews and Brekka 9.6 from 5, so I would treat those scores as a first impression, not a track record.
If Langisandur itself is the point, two stays are within walking distance. The Owl apartment is less than 1 km from the beach, renovated, with family rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, private check-in and a 24-hour front desk, rated 9.6 from 86 reviews. The villa called Peaceful and well located with hot tub in Akranes- Íceland is a short walk from the sand and adds a hot tub, a heated pool, a barbecue and room for pets, but its perfect 10 comes from a single review. Langisandur is one of only three Blue Flag beaches in Iceland, and local sea swimmers meet there three times a week.
The two Móar stays hold 2,540 of the 3,064 reviews, but they are not beach stays. Móar Cottage is a studio just outside Akranes, about 5.6 km from the shops, sleeping four on a double bed, a bunk behind curtains and a sofa bed, with a kitchenette on hot plates, check-in from 17:00 and no pets, rated 8.4 from 1,654 reviews. Móar guesthouse gives every room a balcony or patio with sea and mountain views and a full kitchen, rated 8.3 from 886. The cottage faces open countryside, not the bay. I would book the guesthouse for its view, the cottage for space, and drive to the beach.
A traveler's takeI would book Teigur Guesthouse first: it is on the beach, its 9.7 rests on hundreds of reviews, and the free bicycles get you to Breiðin and back before dinner. For a couple, Panorama Glass Lodge WEST is the stay I would gamble on for the sauna and hot tub by the sea, knowing that 8 reviews prove little. Akranes is not for travellers who want restaurants and nightlife outside the door, and the Móar stays are not for anyone who pictured sand under the window. For everyone else, I would make it the first night out of Keflavík on the way north, not a base for day trips back to the capital.
CoastalPeaceful and well located with hot tub in Akranes- Íceland
Coastal villa with a private beach, hot tub, and heated pool
Why guests love itThis villa in Akranes offers a peaceful coastal stay with a private beach area, a garden and a terrace. It has a hot tub, a heated pool, a kitchenette and barbecue facilities, and Langisandur Beach is a short walk away. Pets are welcome. It has a single guest review so far, which is too few to judge, so this page rests on the listed facilities.
CoastalPanorama Glass Lodge WEST
Beachfront lodge with sea views, private balconies, and a spa
Why guests love itPanorama Glass Lodge WEST in Akranes has direct beachfront access and sea views. The air-conditioned rooms have private bathrooms, balconies and kitchenettes. Guests can use a sauna, a hot tub and a pool with a view, plus a sun terrace and a garden. It suits couples looking for a coastal break. Guests rate it 9.8, though across only 8 reviews.
CoastalTeigur Guesthouse
Beachfront guesthouse with family rooms, free bikes, and a sun terrace
Why guests love itTeigur Guesthouse in Akranes has direct beachfront access, a sun terrace and a garden. Family rooms look onto the garden, and guests share a kitchen and a lounge. WiFi is free, bicycles can be used at no charge, and private parking is on site, so a family can explore the area on two wheels. Guests rate it 9.7 across 424 reviews, an outstanding score on a solid sample.
CoastalThe Owl apartment
Renovated apartment with a sun terrace, garden, and a short walk to the beach
Why guests love itThe Owl apartment is a recently renovated bed and breakfast unit in Akranes with family rooms, a private bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. A sun terrace and a garden give children space outside, and free WiFi, private check-in and a 24-hour front desk make arrivals easy. Langisandur Beach is less than 1 km away. A 9.6 rating comes from 86 reviews, a smaller sample. I would choose it for a family wanting a kitchen close to the beach.
CoastalBrekka Retreat and Spa Iceland
Adults-only lodge with sea and mountain views, spa, and hot tub
Why guests love itBrekka Retreat and Spa Iceland in Akranes is an adults-only lodge with sea and mountain views. Each ground-floor unit has a private entrance, parquet floors and soundproofing, with a private bathroom and kitchen facilities. Guests can use a spa and wellness centre, a sauna, a hot tub and a terrace, and there is a garden and a patio. It holds a 9.6 rating, but from only 5 reviews, so the sample is very small.
CoastalMóar Cottage
Self-catering studio cottage in the fields outside Akranes, 43 km from Reykjavík
Why guests love itMóar Cottage works for a family of up to four who don't mind one room: a double bed with a bunk above it sits behind curtains, and the living area has a sofa bed. The private shower room and a kitchenette with hot plates cover simple meals, and parking is right outside the door. For children, Langisandur beach in Akranes, with its geothermal pool, and the easy outdoor space around the cottage are the draws. The limits: no separate bedroom for parents, check-in only from 17:00, and no pets. For more than two nights with children, I would look for a cottage with a real bedroom.
CoastalMóar guesthouse
Comfortable guesthouse with sea and mountain views, plus private parking
Why guests love itMóar guesthouse in Akranes gives rooms with sea and mountain views, each with a balcony or a patio. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, a garden and a terrace, plus free WiFi and free private parking. Guests rate it 8.3 across 886 reviews, a large sample for a small guesthouse. Our editorial verdict: a quiet, self-catered stay for couples and budget-minded travellers on the west coast.
Local tips
- 1Swim the way locals do at Langisandur: a short dip in the Atlantic from the beach, then a long soak in Guðlaug, the three-level pool built into the sea wall at Jaðarsbakkar. There is no lifeguard on the beach.
- 2Guðlaug has minimal facilities, so come in your swimsuit with a towel, or change at Jaðarsbakkalaug next door: the town pool has full changing rooms and showers, a 25 m pool, two hot tubs, a sauna and a slide, and you shower without a swimsuit before going in.
- 3Drive the Hvalfjörður tunnel, toll-free since 2018, when you are in a hurry, but take Route 47 around the fjord at least once in summer. The Glymur trail starts at its head, and the log over the Botnsá is removed before winter.
- 4Climb the newer lighthouse at Breiðin, at the southern tip of town: it houses the Akranes information office and opens to visitors, and the older 1918 tower stands next to it. The point faces open sea, away from most of the town's lights.
- 5For northern lights between September and April, walk out to Breiðin or the Kalmansvík shore rather than looking from town. Akranes faces the glow of Reykjavík across the bay to the south-east, so face west or north.
- 6Without a car, the Strætó route 57 links Akranes with the Mjódd terminal in Reykjavík. Teigur Guesthouse and The Owl apartment are the two stays I would choose then: one is on the beach, the other less than 1 km from Langisandur.
- 7Hike Akrafjall, the flat-topped mountain behind town, from the Akranes Water Works car park, where a board shows the paths. Its summits look down on the whole peninsula, so pick a clear, calm day and read the vedur.is wind forecast first.
- 8Use Akranes as the first night on the way to Snæfellsnes: Borgarnes is about 38 km further north, so you reach the peninsula early the next morning instead of adding the whole drive to a long arrival day from Keflavík.
- 9In winter, open umferdin.is and the vedur.is wind forecast before leaving Reykjavík: Route 1 across Kjalarnes, just before the Hvalfjörður tunnel, is exposed to strong gusts and has been closed during storms.
- 10For self-catering, stock up in town before heading out to Móar or the lodges: Akranes has a Krónan on Dalbraut and a Bónus on Smiðjuvellir, both open every day of the week.
